Health and Safety Manager
LOCATION: Sarnia, Ontario
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
HOURLY RATE: $35/Hour
CONTRACT DURATION: 1 Year (Ideally looking for this candidate to transition into full-time permanent)
SUMMARY OF ROLE
Responsible for implementing, monitoring, and enforcing the Company Health and Safety policies and programs, ensuring safe working procedures on Company work sites and facilities.
KEY RESPONSIBLITIES AND SERVICES PROVIDED
- Provides counsel and advice to management on all EH&S related matters
- Develops and promotes a healthy and safe work environment by overseeing all aspects of Health and Safety for all Mellon locations
- Partners with all levels of management to set performance expectations and safety goals for entire Company as well as branch and project specific performance metrics
- Develops programs/processes to ensure compliance with federal, provincial, industry and client regulations with Mellon policies, procedures and practices by working with management to train, implement and institutionalize changes and continue to build safety program essentials
- Provides Health and Safety training and operational audits. Drive root cause preventative action closure of audit findings within required deadlines
- Analyses incident and injury trends to identity training deficiencies, behavioral issues, or other opportunities for operations and work flow improvements
- Acts as a Company liaison with various governmental agencies as required and when appropriate
- Ensures management remains aware of any potential EH&S-related issues that may negatively impact the business
- Develops and manages awareness programs to increase employee involvement along with influencing cultural and personnel adaptation to Health and Safety Programs
- Provides leadership in effectively communicating and influencing employees and managers to maximize overall performance in meeting Mellon safety goals and objectives
- Provides timely Health and Safety progress reporting and assure all Health and Safety measurement systems are implemented and reported appropriately
- Maintains strong working relationships with WSIB, MOL and other industry safety associations
- Provides any and all safety reports, statistics and corrective actions undertaken to senior management as required
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
- Establishes and maintains proven H&S policies and procedures
- Develops meaningful qualitative and quantitative measurements to be sued to measure the effectiveness of both Corporate and Project H&S programs
- Develops and reports on H&S metrics that track the effectiveness of H&S
- Implements and monitors all EH&S policies/procedures and programs across all facets of the Company’s business
- Develops a system of checks and balances in the H&S program to ensure that there is a continuous mode of developing, following and improving upon safe work practices, not only on project site locations but in fabrication facilities as well
- Develops, executes and follows up on H&S issues on project/branch basis ensuring all corrective actions required are undertaken
- Continually prospects for, qualifies and maintains contact with H&S professionals who may be employed on project sites on a just in time basis
- Provides project H&S professionals with both a position profile and a Performance Evaluation and Development Plan to enable a proper evaluation of performance and conducts periodic performance evaluations on both a qualitative and quantitative basis of field personnel
- Reviews improvement targets annually and establishes appropriate measurements and H&S targets to measure the effectiveness of the Corporate H&S department
- Maintains and communicates an awareness of H&S developments and legislative changes and compliances that could impact the Company, to senior management
- Develops and maintains strong working relationships with external H&S consultants
- Effectively utilizes H&S resources and professionals to ensure all projects have competent and timely H&S support
- Maintains Company H&S policies, procedures and manuals
PERSON SPECIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor of Arts or Science in Occupational Health and Safety, or related technical discipline
- Professional certification (i.e. Canadian Registered Safety Professional – CRSP, or Certified Safety Professional – CSP)
Experience/Skills
- 5+ years of experience and a proven track record of successfully leading Health and Safety programs and compliances in a multiple location and construction project environment
- Demonstrated H&S experience in the Construction Industry at a Senior Management level
