Location of Services: Fort St John, BC
Work Assignment Requirements
Shift is 14/7, 10 hours per day, 70 hours maximum per week
Airfare at cost or mileage in lieu of airfare per BCH policy
Max 4 hours travel time to/from home to/from jobsite - no additional cost
LOA and per diem not allowed
• Camp accommodations and meals supplied
BCH expense policy to apply
Experience and Role Accountabilities
• A minimum eight (8) years of experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent.
• Develop safe engineering solutions by using initiative and judgement to perform tasks including developing designs, analyzing and resolving problems, and interpreting engineering specifications on medium complexity and scope assignments for BC Hydro projects and operations.
• Assist project or operations management to meet safety, cost, quality, and time objectives by proposing changes in plans and estimated costs, recommending payment for work completed by contractors, preparing progress reports, coordinating work schedules and other similar tasks.
• Resolve highly technical and unusual design and field engineering problems by conducting independent studies and analysis, exercising independent judgment in selecting and interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs to support successful operations and/or project completion at BC Hydro.
• Participate in BC Hydro’s engineering practice by conducting independent studies and analysis, contributing to the development of technical standards, exercising judgment in selecting and interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs, and making decisions related to methods and designs as well as providing guidance and advice to other engineering professionals to develop future capability at BC Hydro.

• Prior to commencement on assignment, the selected candidate must have their own sole practitioner, or the use of their firm’s, Permit to Practice with EGBC.
• EGBC Registrants provided to BC Hydro through this assignment shall work under BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan, Quality Management Pillar. The Registrant shall apply their own or their firm’s Permit to Practice Number to work that is Sealed by the Registrant. Retention and preservation of all project documentation produced by the Registrant during their contract with BC Hydro will be retained by BC Hydro to satisfy EGBC Bylaws.

Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC or with another jurisdiction and eligible for registration as such with Engineers & Geoscientists BC
• BC Hydro uses a Digital Sign and Seal Technology. You may be required to subscribe to a digital seal technology service offered by Notarius
•Intermediate English skills for professional environment, written and spoken
•Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards
•Ability to use standard industry design/analysis software
•Intermediate MS Office skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
Additional Experience and Role Accountabilities
• This role requires experience with the design of mechanical systems for hydroelectric utility generation stations and demonstrated experience working with utility design solutions a in an electric utility environment.
• This position is needed to help with an increasing Mechanical work load in capital projects, OMA work programs and Owners Engineer review work.
• Generation Mechanical systems include and are not limited to:
o hydraulic turbines and generators (Pelton, Francis, Kaplan)
o governor systems
o gates - intake, draft tube, maintenance
o penstock inlet valves and turbine inlet valves
o powerhouse cranes and gantry cranes
o hoist and other lifting devices
o Industrial HVAC as it applies to hydroelectric stations
o balance of plant piping systems - cooling water, service water, domestic potable water, sewage, drainage, dewatering
o compressed air systems - plant air, sync condense systems, brake air
o oil water separators
o fire protection and fire alarm as it applies to hydroelectric stations - sprinkler wet and dry systems, clean agent systems, aerosol systems, inertization systems, transformer deluge systems, generator deluge systems, fire detection and fire alarm panels
• The candidate(s) will provide engineering services to carry out mechanical projects within the BC Hydro Generation Mechanical group.
• Prepare project documentation and deliverables in accordance with BC Hydro project and Engineering Design Practices (i.e. evaluation reports, specifications, proposals, estimates, design basis, calculations, hazard logs, test plans);
• Prepare design work packages including scope, duration, and level of effort estimates;
• Interact with project initiator / requestor / operations personnel to establish and prepare user requirement;
• Work with estimating group to support the preparation of various level estimates, understand the input required and provide it to the estimator;
• Interact with procurement personnel to engage a consultant/contractor. Work with the procurement team from start of procurement process up to signature of the contract;
• Prepare signed/sealed engineering deliverables as a Professional of Record (PoR) in accordance with EGBC and BC Hydro Design Practices;
• Provide technical assistance and construction support in the field, and undertake field reviews as required by EGBC;
• Design upgrades for mechanical systems using state of the art design tools;
• Act in the role of Owner's Engineer, and efficiently manage working relationships with manufacturers, consultants and project teams ensuring that BC Hydro's needs are met or exceeded;
• Communicate effectively, be a key contributor in large and small project teams coordinating complex work including planning, estimating and managing resources;
• Provide work leadership and technical direction to junior engineers, technologists, consultants and support staff;
• Review work of the project team and of other consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy and achievement of required results and adherence to engineering good practices and standards;
• Prepare reports detailing condition assessment investigations of facility equipment and systems, evaluation and analysis of the investigation, and recommendations to address any deficiencies found;
• Provide technical guidance during equipment installation and commissioning;
• Prepare or review/accept inspection test plans for factory acceptance test and site acceptance test;
• Prepare commissioning test plans and summary of requirements documentation;
• Perform various engineering calculations (hydraulic calculation, stress analysis, fatigue analysis…)
Additional Education and Skills
• Class 5 driver’s license in good standing
• Ability to travel across the Province for short and long term assignments
• Ability to find engineering solutions that add value and to reach consensus
• Ability to communicate efficiently including verbal and technical writing in the English language, analytical, interpersonal communications and presentation skills
• Experience in project management including estimating, cost control and project administration;
• Ability to coordinate multiple projects and to plan and manage project resources
• Ability to prepare technical specifications for tendering, evaluate tenders, and make recommendations for awards
Must have experience :
Hydro Electric Turbine and/or generator installation or refurbishment experience
Nice to have experience : Welding inspection, precision measurements, Quality Assurance, Coating, Commissioning, unit alignment, piping
