Position Description
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Plant Supervisor is responsible for the strategic and administrative management of the CNC machining department. This role oversees production schedules, workforce planning, policy adherence, and coordination with other departments to ensure efficiency, quality, and on-time delivery. The Supervisor will focus on operational organization, employee development, and process improvement to achieve company objectives.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage production scheduling to ensure customer delivery commitments are met.
- Monitor adherence to policies, procedures, and safety regulations within the department.
- Oversee workforce planning, including shift coverage, vacation scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Track department performance metrics and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Coordinate with quality, engineering, and production control to support manufacturing needs.
- Ensure compliance with training programs and develop training schedules for employees.
- Maintain the skills matrix and machinist competencies.
- Support new hire onboarding training and development, along with integration within the team.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives, lean manufacturing, and efficiency gains.
- Act as the primary liaison for cross-functional collaboration, expediting work orders, and addressing manufacturing priorities.
- Handle administrative responsibilities, including timekeeping, payroll approvals, and vacation tracking.
- Drive a positive work environment through employee engagement, coaching, and performance management.
HEALTH AND SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), regulations, and internal health and safety policies and procedures.
- Help create a healthy work environment by not condoning or participating in any harassment, discrimination, gossiping or unfair treatment of any employee.
- Report any defective equipment or protective device which could become a safety concern.
- Report any contravention of the OHSA regulations or safety policies and procedures.
- DO NOT use or operate any equipment, machine, device, etc. that is not in safe working condition.
- DO NOT engage in any pranks, contests, feats of strength, unnecessary running, or rough and boisterous conduct.
- Know, understand, and implement safe work practices and procedures.
- Know, understand, and employ established rules and procedures for handling materials, equipment, and processes (e.g., proper lifting techniques).
- Use equipment and materials only in the manner intended.
- Attend required safety training programs and apply knowledge from these sessions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE:
- 5+ years of experience in manufacturing leadership, preferably in CNC machining.
- Strong understanding of production scheduling, workflow management, and operational efficiency.
- Experience managing teams and implementing training programs.
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance, workplace safety, and manufacturing policies.
- Strong leadership, conflict resolution, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in analyzing data, identifying trends, and implementing process improvements.
- AS9100, ISO9001, NADCAP experience would be an asset.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Promote and implement workplace safety and health programs for the work unit, coaching and directing employees on safe work practices to reduce accident frequency and severity.
- Conduct inspections and investigations, report and follow up on accident incidents or unsafe operating conditions.
- Oversee return-to-work and employee accommodations; participate in case review committees and the local health and safety committee.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, conflict management, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization.
- Considerable skill in the operation of machine tools and the use of precision measuring devices.
- Direct, coach, and provide leadership to employees; promote a respectful environment and create learning opportunities for staff.
- Evaluate operational methods and procedures, recommend improvements, implement changes, and communicate with support groups as needed.
- Ability to apply machinist craft techniques, processes, and principles.
- Ability to apply shop mathematics to practical problems such as computing dimensions, laying out work, and setting up machine tools.
- Respond promptly to equipment failures, adjust meet scheduled deadlines, prepare reports, and notify Production Control and Reporting.
