Position Overview

BC Hydro is seeking an Assistant Project Engineer – Lines & Interconnections to work with cross-functional teams to ensure project designs are safe, effective, and compliant with regulatory and corporate requirements. This role focuses on the electrical design of overhead transmission lines and underground cables for operating voltages ranging from 60 kV to 500 kV, with responsibilities spanning from concept design to commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop safe, effective engineering solutions for low- to medium-complexity projects using professional judgment and technical expertise.

• Prepare project documentation including evaluation reports, design bases, specifications, estimates, hazard logs, and test plans in accordance with BC Hydro Engineering Design Practices.

• Prepare signed/sealed engineering deliverables as a Professional of Record (PoR) in compliance with EGBC and BC Hydro standards.

• Conduct engineering calculations for transmission lines including:

  • Electrical clearances, electromagnetic/electrostatic field studies, induction, transient overvoltages, AC interference, ampacity, radio interference, audible noise, lightning protection, grounding, arcing, soil resistivity, and EMTP studies.

• Produce designs, drawings, and specifications for electrical systems on transmission overhead lines (e.g., surge arresters, disconnect switches, lightning protection, circuit separation).

• Provide technical assistance and field support during construction, including site reviews as required by EGBC.

• Coordinate with project/operations management to meet safety, cost, quality, and schedule objectives.

• Review and provide technical guidance on designs prepared by others.

• Manage design tasks including scope, schedule, and cost control.

Required Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

• Professional Registration: Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).

• Experience:

  • Minimum 4 years of engineering experience, preferably in substation, transmission lines, or protection & control systems.

  • Familiarity with engineering across the project lifecycle (conceptual design to commissioning).

  • Understanding of multi-discipline project delivery priorities and interactions.

• Technical Skills:

  • Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards.

  • Proficiency in industry design/analysis software.

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills in English.

• Other:

  • Class 5 driver’s license.

  • Permit to Practice (sole practitioner or via firm) with EGBC prior to assignment start.

Assets / Nice to Have

• Previous BC Hydro or electric utility experience.

• Experience with telecom and/or protection and control projects.

• Knowledge of BC Hydro’s project delivery processes and design practices.

• Site experience on large construction projects such as hydroelectric stations, substations, or transmission lines.

• The position is subject to BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan (Quality Management Pillar).

• The engineer will apply their Permit to Practice number to all sealed work, and BC Hydro will retain all project documentation to meet EGBC requirements.
