Purpose of the position
Briefly state the job’s principal purpose (what is the incumbent paid to accomplish) in two or three sentences.
Your role as a Senior Engineer – Mechanical Design will be to undertake specific design tasks to achieve engineering outputs to program schedule, cost, and specification, for both project and bids in accordance with the contract requirements, statements of work and Engineering Department procedures.
You will perform a lead role, managing mechanical engineer(s), and will coordinate communication among engineering, production and quality on problem investigation and resolution. You may also perform more complex engineering support tasks under limited supervision to ensure design and build meets project deliverable requirements.

Carry out the function of Senior Mechanical Design Engineer including but not limited to:
Ensure budgets and agreed schedule are adhered to
- Identify development needs and opportunities of team members and provide coaching to develop technical capability in line with the Departmental training plan and co-ordination with overall Engineering skills and capability development
- Support Performance Development Reviews and technical competency assessment.
- Hold regular check-ins with your team
- Hold and attend DFMA meetings
- Input into lessons learnt meetings.
- Lead technical meetings.
Resolve design queries and Inspection reports, including technical solutions to warranty issues.
Work to standards, processes & procedures, ensure rigour, resilience and continuous improvement in design solutions, meeting all regulatory requirements, conforming to specifications, quality and certification requirements.
- Design products that are safe and meet all statutory requirements.
- To produce, amend and check drawings and Items lists and release them for use by other departments in line with department processes.
Collaborating across Engineering Functions, including Electrical and manufacturing
Ensuring design solutions are tolerant of the environment in which they operate.
To identify opportunities to reduce costs in design, materials used and manufacturing techniques.
- To demonstrate flair, novel solutions to design problems using latest technologies and have input to design processes to reduce project / product cost and time to market.
Work effectively across the matrix and deliver bottom-line performance collaboratively.
Challenge the status quo, bring new ideas to improve engineering quality, productivity, and timeliness of delivery.
Tasks:
A piece of work to be done within the responsibility of the role. i.e. keep records of maintenance, coordinate work with engineers, assemble prototypes of machines for testing etc.
Maintain a current and up-to-date knowledge of developments of existing and new products to recommend innovations to improve the quality and effectiveness of company products.
Work to standards, processes & procedures, ensure rigors, resilience, and continuous improvement in design solutions, meeting all regulatory requirements, conforming to specifications, quality and certification requirements.
Carry out drawing modifications and amendments as and when required.
Controlling product, build standard, drawing and document configuration control.
Challenge the status quo, bring new ideas to improve engineering quality, productivity, and timeliness of delivery.
Support with answering production questions during drawing check and sign off.
Support production project meetings.
Support drawing check and sign off through production.
Support process development and governance.
Print original copies of drawings (If required) for designers to supply production with engineering drawings.
Analyze Change Requests within PLM.
Approve Purchase Parts within PLM.
Support creation of redlines where required.
Support production in raising queries (Problem Reports) in PLM.
Creating CR’s, CT’s and CN’s for new tasks/ products.
Updating CR’s, CT’s and CN’s.
Build EBS structure in PLM for new products/ projects.
Update design metrics.
Raise DOI’s and Stop orders.
Fix ESI failures.
Support department objectives.
Support new starter inductions.

Technical Competencies:
Applied or technical knowledge and skills needed for effective performance in the role. i.e., commercial acumen, computer skills etc.
Mechanical Design Engineering.
Proficient with Autodesk Inventor.
Proficient with Windchill PLM with experience in populating Part attributes, building Part structures, raising, and completing Change Requests, Change Notices and Change Tasks.
Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with energy and enthusiasm to all levels within and outside the business.
The ability to apply your skills and knowledge across a wide and diverse range of projects.
Sound understanding of product safety and standards.
Experienced with working to requirements.
Broad understanding of manufacturing techniques including, sheet metal fabrication, riveting, bonding, and welding.
Good communication skills.
Good IT skills, including Word and Excel.

Strong aptitude for developing computing skills and the ability to learn new software packages.
Education:
An appropriate Engineering discipline from an accredited university or have equivalent knowledge gained through other forms of education or training (Professional designation (P. Eng.), or equivalent experience)
