Generation stations Mechanical Engineering Balance of Plant team has an exciting opportunity for a mechanical engineer based out of BC Hydro’s Edmonds office in Burnaby. The team supports hydroelectric and thermal capital projects by designing auxiliary systems, conducting condition assessments for asset management and providing pre-release project scoping and operational support. Design work is focused on HVAC and industrial piping including water, air, and oil systems. Projects vary in scale from small single discipline projects to larger, multi-discipline projects with costs over $100 million.
The successful candidate will:
* Be a safety leader.
* Be skilled as a design engineer and Professional of Record.
* Be skilled as the owner’s engineer capable of reviewing and accepting the work of external entities on behalf of BC Hydro.
* Collaborate with other disciplines including protection and controls, electrical, civil, estimating, procurement, operations, construction management, and project management to develop project scope and engineering solutions.
* Provide work leadership, mentorship and technical direction to junior engineers, technologists, consultants, and support staff including drafters and 3D designers.
* Act as the project engineer for multi-discipline projects with predominantly mechanical scope to support project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and technical integration.
* Conduct data driven risk assessments and prepare engineering memos and reports to support decision-making and funding approval.
* Prepare design calculations, issued for construction drawings and specifications to support project completion.
* Plan and execute field investigations and site visits.
* Be comfortable traveling to and working at site.
What you bring
* Eight (8+) years or more of relevant practical engineering experience.
* Graduated with a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering.
* Registered, or eligible to immediately register, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientist of British Columbia (EGBC)
* A strong understanding of the applicable codes including ASME, CSA and ASHRAE and BC specific regulations.
* Experience related to the following systems: HVAC and industrial water systems including equipment such as pumps, compressors, pressure vessels and back-up diesel generators. This could include experience with detailed design, stress analysis, process engineering, fabrication and construction, performance investigations, repairs/modifications and upgrades. Knowledge of the hydroelectric industry or similar transferrable experience is an asset.

* A preference will be given to those with the following:
- Deep experience in both HVAC and industrial piping projects in hydroelectric powerplants from concept through to construction and commissioning.
- Proficiency in HVAC and piping design software packages including HAP, AFT FATHOM and CAESAR II.
- Leadership qualities.
