Software Team Manager – Embedded & Web Tech (Aerospace/Defense)
About the Opportunity
Location: Ottawa, ON (100% Onsite)
Type: Full-Time, Permanent | Aerospace & Defense | ~$150K + Bonus + Benefits
Are you a technical team lead or senior developer ready to take the next step into full team management? Do you thrive at the intersection of software engineering, systems thinking, and people leadership?
We’re seeking a Software Team Manager to lead a multidisciplinary group of embedded systems developers, full-stack engineers, and enterprise software specialists. This is a hands-on, high-impact leadership opportunity with one of the aerospace industry’s leading software innovators — shaping mission-critical communication technologies used in both civilian and defense aviation systems.
As a key technical leader, you’ll be responsible for building team culture, driving execution, and contributing to technical strategy — from embedded development to enterprise web platforms. If you're execution-focused, passionate about high standards, and eager to scale both yourself and those around you, this role will elevate your career within a mission-driven, product-focused organization.
What You’ll Be Doing
-
Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of ~13 engineers (embedded, full-stack, and systems).
-
Build a strong team culture focused on delivery, innovation, and ownership.
-
Partner with cross-functional groups including hardware, QA, project management, and executive leadership.
-
Drive technical execution and support the full development lifecycle from prototyping to deployment.
-
Support system documentation, root-cause analysis, and quality management initiatives.
-
Deliver on program goals, staffing alignment, scheduling, and resourcing.
-
Collaborate on product roadmaps, DevOps practices, and Agile improvements.
-
Contribute to future product planning and strategic growth initiatives.
What You Bring
-
10+ years in software development with at least 5 years in team leadership.
-
Strong hands-on background in Linux and web-based software development.
-
Experience managing technical teams in regulated or mission-critical environments.
-
Excellent communication, coaching, and stakeholder management skills.
-
Proven ability to lead engineers in dynamic, fast-paced settings.
-
Must be based in Ottawa or willing to relocate; this is an onsite role.
Bonus Points
-
Experience with embedded systems and real-time applications.
-
Background in aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability sectors.
-
Familiarity with Agile methodologies, product lifecycle leadership, and system certification processes.
-
Knowledge of AS9100, ISO 9001, or other quality management systems.
-
Success in leading technical transformation or process improvement initiatives.
Why This Role Stands Out
-
Lead a high-impact technical product environment at the forefront of aerospace innovation.
-
Manage meaningful work that contributes to aviation safety and performance.
-
Join a team culture that values ownership, technical excellence, and collaboration.
-
Competitive compensation, bonus structure, benefits, and ongoing professional growth opportunities.
Apply now to take the next step in your leadership career within a mission-driven, product-focused organization developing the next generation of aerospace software systems.
Please note: Due to the nature of the work, only candidates eligible to work in Canada and available to work onsite in Ottawa will be considered.
