The Technical Officer in the Inage and Outage Waste Management Section provides a variety of services including technical evaluations, station operational support, considerations and proposals, as required in a number of major/minor work areas on site, maintains instructions and procedures up to date, prepares reports, interfaces with relevant workgroups, participates in training programs as required, and coordinates staff involved in the above activities.

The Technical Officer in the Inage and Outage Waste Management Section provides a variety of services including technical evaluations, station operational support, considerations and proposals, as required in a number of major/minor work areas on site, maintains instructions and procedures up to date, prepares reports, interfaces with relevant workgroups, participates in training programs as required, and coordinates staff involved in the above activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in development, implementation, and execution of conventional & hazardous waste management programs/processes at Bruce Power
- Gather waste disposal requests, review and determine efficient conventional & hazardous waste execution methodologies in accordance with all applicable regulatory requirements
- Provide support for sustained and improved waste management execution performance through: ongoing assessment/surveillance, problem solving, development of objectives and targets, and development/maintenance of long term plans
- Provide technical support for execution of the station/centre of site conventional & hazardous waste management and/or station improvement initiatives and projects
- Provides technical evaluations and advice, solves problems and coordinates technical work as required in support of the operation, maintenance, design, and commissioning of the facilities as it pertains to conventional & hazardous waste management
- Receives assignments as well as identifies, assesses, evaluates, and recommends disposition and/or solutions to potential problems and opportunities as it pertains to lconventional & hazardous waste management
- Support maintaining and/or updating operating and other specified department/divisional procedures In support of applicable programs. Discusses these with operating personnel or others as required to ensure current practices are recognized in the procedure
- Provide information and data to support regulatory reports as needed. Initiates studies or investigations where opportunities for improvement are apparent.
- Reviews proposals received from internal or external sources. Discusses proposal with originator as necessary to suggest changes or revisions as appropriate. Recommends disposition of proposal for eventual decision for the approving authority
- Prepares or helps prepare specifications and recommendations, for purchasing requisitions for material, services and equipment.
- Participates in training programs to further own development and assists in the development of others
- May be required to gather and collate data for use in department budget preparation and to monitor variances to annual budget and submit for reporting purposes
- Performs other duties as required
Knowledge and Skills:
- Basic knowledge of CANDU or nuclear power plant systems and operations is an asset
- Requires knowledge in interpreting, applying, and implementing environmental regulations and best practices
- Requires advanced knowledge of one or more of these subjects to evaluate and propose improvements to processes, equipment and systems and to facility or unit safety, reliability
- and performance
- Requires knowledge and fluency of English in order to prepare clear and concise reports and recommendations both verbally and in writing
- Ability to interface effectively with operations/technical staff, regulators and other stakeholders via excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Good working knowledge of standard software applications (Microsoft Office, Maximo, etc.) related to production/modification/update of reports, spreadsheets, databases, graphic presentations and the like
Education and Experience
- Requires knowledge normally acquired through the successful completion of an accredited four year university education in an appropriate engineering or science field or having the equivalent level of education
- Requires an academic background in the areas of: Environment, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Sustainability, Earth Sciences.
- Requires experience to solve problems, to provide advice and guidance, to initiate developmental studies and to make recommendations during the design, commissioning and operation of a nuclear facility as it relates to waste management
- A period of over 3 years is considered necessary to gain this experience
- Waste deposal site experience is an asset
- Execution experience as a Technical Officer is an asset
- Environment/Waste is an asset
