About IESO
The Independent Electricity System Operator, or IESO, is a government agency in Ontario responsible for managing the province’s electricity system. It ensures that supply and demand for electricity are balanced in real time and that the power grid operates reliably and efficiently. The IESO also runs Ontario’s electricity market, where electricity is bought and sold, and helps plan for the province’s long-term energy needs. This includes forecasting electricity demand, acquiring new energy resources, and integrating renewable energy and emerging technologies into the grid. The organization works with a wide range of stakeholders, including utilities, energy companies, municipalities, and Indigenous communities, to support a reliable, sustainable, and affordable electricity system. The IESO is headquartered in Toronto and plays a key role in shaping Ontario’s energy future.
Key Responsibilities
- The role involves developing and maintaining detailed power system models to support real-time grid operations, planning studies, and reliability assessments within Ontario’s electricity market.
- Performing load flow, short-circuit, transient stability, and contingency analyses using industry-standard simulation tools.
- Coordinate protection settings, equipment sizing, and ensure compliance with NERC, NPCC, and Ontario grid codes.
- Preparing technical reports and collaborating closely with operations, planning, market teams, and external stakeholders.
- Contributes to ensuring the reliability and security of Ontario’s electricity system through detailed simulation and analysis.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
- Around 4 to 6 years of professional experience in power system analysis, modeling, and simulation.
- Hands-on experience with industry-standard power system simulation software such as PSS/E, ETAP, PSCAD, or DIgSILENT.
- Experience conducting studies like load flow, short-circuit, transient stability, protection coordination, and contingency analysis.
- Knowledge of North American electric grid standards, including NERC and NPCC reliability criteria.
- Familiarity with Ontario’s electricity market and grid operations is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills to produce reports and collaborate with multiple teams.
Why It Pays to Be a Power Systems Analysis and Simulation Expert
- Tackle complex, high-impact projects shaping Ontario’s future power landscape.
- Influence rule changes, market design evolution, and wholesale operations.
- Engage directly with regulators, stakeholders, and IESO leadership.
- Enjoy a collaborative, mission-driven environment with hybrid work flexibility
