About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to support nuclear generation and refurbishment operations. The successful candidate will bring hands-on experience in CANDU nuclear systems and strong expertise in I&C system design, control logic development, and process instrumentation within a regulated nuclear environment.
This role emphasizes front-end engineering activities within the Engineering Change Control (ECC) process, requiring a deep understanding of nuclear governance, configuration management, and safety culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support I&C system design, modification, and maintenance activities for nuclear station systems.
- Provide technical expertise on instrumentation, control logic, distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), and field instrumentation.
- Develop and stamp engineering calculations, design drawings, loop diagrams, logic schematics, and control narratives in compliance with CSA, IEEE, and nuclear standards.
- Execute front-end engineering deliverables of the ECC process, ensuring constructability, maintainability, and operational safety.
- Support troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and corrective action development for I&C systems and components.
- Manage temporary configuration changes (TCC) for control and monitoring systems to ensure safe, compliant plant operation.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams (electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers) to deliver high-quality, on-schedule solutions.
- Ensure strict adherence to nuclear safety, quality assurance, and regulatory requirements.
- Mentor junior engineers and technologists, fostering technical growth and compliance with engineering governance.
Experience & Skills
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario (in good standing).
- CANDU or nuclear plant experience (required).
- Proven expertise in control systems design, DCS/PLC configuration, and field instrumentation integration.
- Strong understanding of safety-class I&C systems, calibration standards, and signal conditioning.
- Experience executing ECC packages, developing design documentation, and applying configuration control principles.
- Familiarity with temporary modification (TCC) processes and nuclear site change management practices.
- Solid understanding of CSA N290, IEEE, and IEC standards relevant to I&C and nuclear safety.
- Ability to prepare, review, and stamp engineering deliverables, including control logic, interlocks, and system descriptions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Electrical, Instrumentation, or Control Systems Engineering.
- P.Eng. (Ontario) – required.
- 5+ years’ experience in I&C engineering, ideally in a nuclear, power generation, or process industry environment.
