General Description
The E5 – Engineer is a Professional Engineer or Geoscientist who applies advanced engineering knowledge to deliver innovative engineering, estimating, planning, and quality management services for medium to highly complex transmission and substation projects. This role is accountable for delivering projects safely, with high quality, on time, and within budget, while providing technical leadership and contributing to engineering best practices.
Key Responsibilities

Develop safe, effective engineering solutions through independent judgment, technical analysis, and innovative design approaches for complex transmission and substation projects.

Lead and support multi-disciplinary engineering teams across protection, control, telecom, civil, structural, and electrical disciplines.

Prepare, review, and approve engineering designs, calculations, specifications, and technical documentation.

Resolve complex and unusual design and field engineering challenges through independent studies and technical evaluations.

Establish engineering design criteria, standards, and methodologies to support successful project execution.

Coordinate engineering activities, schedules, cost estimates, progress reporting, and contractor performance.

Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and professional support to engineering staff to build long-term organizational capability.

Support project planning, execution, and delivery to meet safety, cost, quality, and schedule objectives.

Collaborate closely with Project Managers, stakeholders, and delivery partners to ensure alignment and project success.

Ensure compliance with professional practice requirements, quality management systems, and regulatory standards.
Role Specialty: Transmission Stations – Specialist Project Engineer
This role focuses on substation engineering projects, requiring strong technical leadership, project execution capability, and coordination of multi-discipline design teams within a transmission utility environment.
Required Experience & Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Structural, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline from a recognized Canadian university.

Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligible for immediate registration.

Minimum 10 years of utility engineering experience, including significant experience delivering electrical substation projects.

Minimum 4+ years of experience leading multi-disciplinary design teams, particularly in protection, control, and telecommunications systems.

Minimum 4+ years of project engineering or project management experience, including acting as Lead Engineer or Work Package Manager.

PMP certification is required.

Strong technical knowledge of substation design, transmission systems, transmission lines, and system interconnections.

Solid understanding of electric utility operations and transmission system planning.

Proven experience resolving complex engineering challenges and delivering large infrastructure projects.

Strong relationship management, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills.

Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Technical Skills

Proficiency with CAD systems and utility drawing standards.

Experience using industry-standard engineering analysis and design software.

Strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Familiarity with digital sign and seal technologies (e.g., Notarius).
Professional Practice Requirements

Must hold, or have access to, a valid Permit to Practice with Engineers & Geoscientists BC prior to commencing work.

Must comply with BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan and Quality Management Pillar.

Must apply personal or firm Permit to Practice number to all sealed engineering deliverables.

All project documentation produced will be retained in compliance with EGBC bylaws.
