Role Overview
Seeking a Specialist Project Engineer – Transmission (Lines) to support medium to high complexity capital projects. The successful consultant will work with cross-functional and multi-discipline teams to ensure designs are safe, technically sound, compliant with requirements, and delivered on time and within budget. This role requires deep transmission engineering expertise, strong leadership capability, and the ability to independently resolve complex technical challenges.
Key Responsibilities

Apply advanced engineering judgment to develop safe, effective engineering solutions for medium to highly complex transmission projects

Lead and coordinate multi-discipline design teams across planning, design, construction, and commissioning phases

Develop, review, and approve engineering designs, technical reports, drawings, and specifications

Resolve complex and unusual engineering and field issues through independent studies and technical analysis

Establish design bases, criteria, and concepts for major work assignments

Monitor and manage safety, cost, quality, and schedule objectives, including progress reporting and schedule coordination

Review contractor deliverables, recommend payments, and support cost and scope control

Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and advice to other engineering professionals

Support engineering practice by contributing to standards, best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives

Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, external consultants, contractors, and delivery partners

Define scopes of engineering services and assess work progress against standards, objectives, and specifications
Required Experience and Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Structural, or related engineering discipline
-
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligible for immediate registration
-
Minimum 10 years of progressive engineering experience, with significant focus on transmission engineering within an electrical utility environment

Minimum 4 years of experience leading and coordinating multi-discipline design teams on medium to large infrastructure projects

Strong understanding of transmission systems, operations, and system impacts

Experience across the full project lifecycle from conceptual design through construction, testing, and commissioning

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
Additional Assets

Experience with transmission line planning, design, and construction

Experience with substations, protection and control, and telecom systems

Previous electric utility experience

Experience managing Owner’s reviews of externally delivered engineering work

Site experience on large construction projects such as transmission lines, substations, or hydroelectric facilities

Prior project management experience
Technical Skills

Familiarity with CAD systems and utility drawing standards

Proficiency with industry-standard engineering design and analysis software

Intermediate proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Strong written and verbal English communication skills
Professional Practice Requirements

Consultant must hold their own sole practitioner Permit to Practice or work under their firm’s Permit to Practice with EGBC

All work will be performed under BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan and Quality Management Pillar
